Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich made headline news on Easter Sunday with what sounded very much like a concession speech to foe Mitt Romney.
As reported at the reference:
Newt Gingrich said the attacks that have passed between him and Mitt Romney are just “part of the business” of running for president. “I hit him as hard as I could; he hit me as hard as he could,” Gingrich said. “Turns out he had more things to hit with than I did. That’s part of the business.”
He added that the two share a common goal. “We are absolutely committed to defeating Barack Obama,” he said. “This is the most important election, in some ways, since 1860. Barack Obama’s a genuine radical.”
Those words were widely interpreted to mean that Gingrich was in no mood to pursue his third revival of the campaign. A most appropriate message, indeed, for Easter.
No one can be certain, but Gingrich’s move may have been a premeditated dirty trick to lure Rick Santorum into the loser’s circle, thereby improving Newt’s damn near impossible odds, even if ever so slightly.
Newt’s dirty trick worked like a charm as Santorum took the bait and suspended his campaign on Monday.
Before the tears had time to dry following the Santorum surrender, Newt was before the cameras and microphones to issue a grand appeal for Santorum delegates and MONEY, mostly the latter, with these words from reference 2:
So, for the third time in just a few months, Gingrich rose from the dead (politically) and, this time, taunted Santorum by echoing the battle cry, “GAME ON”.I humbly ask Senator Santorum’s supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa,” Mr. Gingrich’s statement continued. The former House speaker’s web site, like most candidates’, puts its funding pitch front and center.
On a Sunday talk show this weekend, Mr. Gingrich was speaking in the past tense about his campaign. But in today’s statement, he said: “I am committed to staying in this race all the way to Tampa so that the conservative movement has a real choice. We know well that only a conservative can protect life, defend the Constitution, restore jobs and growth and return to a balanced budget.”
Of course, the first few words of Newt’s spiel were a dead give away as to the evil in Gingrich’s heart.
To wit, when has Newt Gingrich ever “Humbly” asked for anything?
Now we have even more ominous news to report.
As reported at Reference 3, in part, the man who would promise to return the US to a balanced budget apparently has troubles balancing his own campaign check book:
Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas said a designated agent for the Gingrich campaign brought the filing papers and a check for $500 in March, but the state was notified by the bank that the check had bounced. He said the office has tried to contact the Gingrich campaign through the telephone number and email provided on the application, but has not received a response.
Recently, the state sent a certified letter to the campaign, stating that if the fee isn’t paid by April 20, Gingrich will be disqualified and will not be on the ballot.”
Thus continues the Gingrich saga where these words seem appropriate: THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT!
