Once Again, Barack Obama Cries "Wolf"

By John W. Lillpop

In 2009, President-elect Barack Obama urged the United States Congress to act with haste to pass a one-trillion dollar stimulus bill that Obama claimed was essential to the future prosperity of the American people and generations to follow.

As reported, in part, at Reference 1, in January of 2009:

In his weekly radio address to the nation, Obama will call today for Republicans and Democrats to work together "with the urgency this moment demands" to pass a stimulus bill that reinvests in the nation and puts people back to work.

"Economists from across the political spectrum agree that if we don't act swiftly and boldly, we could see a much deeper economic downturn that could lead to double digit unemployment and the American Dream slipping further and further out of reach," Obama says in his taped remarks.

The nation, he adds, needs a plan that "not only creates jobs in the short term but spurs economic growth and competitiveness in the long term. And this plan must be designed in a new way - we can't just fall into the old Washington habit of throwing money at the problem."

Despite Republican demands for calm and reasoned debate, Democrats did, in fact, pass the trillion-dollar bill which President Obama signed into law on February 17, 2009.

Nearly two years later, America is still in the throes of a deep recession. Unemployment hovers close to the double-digit mark that Obama promised his stimulus baby would avoid.

And the national deficit has exploded out of control.

Now, President Obama is once again using the rhetoric of fear and intimidation in pushing for ratification of the SALT Treaty by the lame-duck Congress.

As reported at Reference 2, in part,

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama sternly proclaimed ratification of the U.S.-Russia nuclear arms treaty "a national security imperative" Thursday, saying the Senate must act before Congress goes home for the year.

"Every month that goes by without a treaty means that we are not able to verify what's going on on the ground in Russia," Obama said. "And if we delay indefinitely, American leadership on nonproliferation and America's national security will be weakened."

Given that he was so wrong about the stimulus, why should informed members of Congress heed Obama's “Wolf” cry concerning this vital national security issue?
