Obama’s Afghanistan War: Good or Dumb?

By John W. Lillpop

As the Barack Obama Great Kill of 2011 turns a fortnight old, pressure is building on America’s Situation Room warrior to end the conflict and bring the troops home.

That cry is particularly strident from the Left, based on Obama’s braggadocio and spiking the football about how the murder of Bin Laden has dealt such a severe blow to Al-Quaeda.

With Al-Quaeda snuffed out, the Leftists argue, America no longer has a vital interest in Afghanistan.

Hmmm.

If that argument has merit, then it would seem safe to conclude that Obama’s 30,000 troop “surge” in 2009 was a wrong-minded ado about one old, frail man living in seclusion in what appears to be Section 8 housing in Pakistan. How many American lives and treasure has Obama spent just because of Osama bin Laden?

Finally, the big question: Was Obama’s “surge” a good move, or, given the facts, one of the “dumbest” war moves in U.S. history?
